THE SALEM LAB

Microfluidic platforms powering the future of diabetes therapy

Here in the Salem Lab, we focus on understanding and treating diabetes

We investigate how diabetes disrupts islet function and vascular biology to drive disease progression and limit effective treatment

Here is some recent news from our lab:

Congratulations Luana on receiving an ISAM Biotech Pilot Project award.

Welcome to Yuyan and Noman, our new PhD students

Our lab has officially moved to King’s College London

MORE ABOUT OUT WORK

Building human models of disease
This includes "islet on a chip" and "pancreas on a chip" systems, blood outgrowth endothelial cell (BOEC) based vascular models, and organoid approaches. Our platforms are applied across multiple disease contexts, including diabetes, cystic fibrosis and cancer.

Understanding diabetes at the cellular level
Our research focuses on how pancreatic islets and blood vessels become dysfunctional in diabetes. We combine stem cell-derived beta cell models, live imaging and functional assays to study insulin secretion, calcium signalling and islet connectivity.

Advancing cell-based therapies
We develop and test regenerative therapies using patient-derived cells. Our work includes autologous stem cell approaches, engineered tissue grafts and transplantation models designed to improve islet graft survival, vascularisation and function.
